Jury Submits Questions For LAPD Officer in Teen Girl's Wrongful Death Trial
The Los Angeles County judge presiding over a wrongful death lawsuit trial is allowing jurors to submit questions for witnesses.
Jurors submitted several for Officer William Dorsey Jones Jr. at the end of his testimony on Thursday, April 23.
Jones and other officers were searching for an assault suspect inside a Burlington Coat Factory in North Hollywood on Dec. 23, 2021, when Jones fired three shots from his AR-15, killing the assailant as well as 14-year-old Valentina Orellana-Peralta, who was hiding in a fitting room with her mother.
Judge Frank Tavelman reviewed jurors questions for Jones with the attorneys in his chambers to decide which to ask.
00:30 "Officer Jones, I'm going to be asking the question, but remember, it's the jurors. I'm just simply their voice."
"So the first question is, are you still currently with the LAPD?"
"Yes."
00:43 "The second question, how many calls have you had since this incident
that you've responded to, or what I think they're talking about, calls that you responded to, calls that were assigned to you that you went to."
"Honestly, I can't, I can't tell you. I don't, I don't know. I don't know the number."
"Do you have an estimate?"
"No."
01:20 " So with LAPD, what is your role been ever since this shooting?"
"So while the investigation was going on, I was on the front desk. Then I was reinstated, like back into the patrol. Then after patrol, I got a position at the court."
"So you work in a courthouse?"
"I'm not in a courthouse, and basically I'm the liaison between LAPD detectives and district attorney and city attorneys."
03:26 "Did you actually spend much time out on patrol, maybe doing overtime shifts or something like that?"
"But I took this new position just because it worked better with with the scheduling is better for me."
"So since it'd be fair to say that since this incident, you really haven't been on patrol much."
"Not a ton."
