What is stormwater Detention? (Episode 2)
Detention deals with the water that becomes runoff. Retained water always leaves the roof as water vapor. Retained water never becomes runoff.

Runoff happens when the green roof is fully saturated and cannot absorb any more rain. The live roof sits there like a wet sponge. One drop in equals one drop out - the green roof has become a pipeline.
This happens especially during XL rain events (storms) and when it has been raining several days in a row (2nd-day storms). Large water volumes in a short time-span can lead to the sewers reaching maximum capacity, leading to combined sewer overflows. It also leads to flooding and economic and ecological damage.

Detention deals with this water. Detention delays the outflow of the water in a predictable and reliable manner so that the peak of the storm can pass before the water is released.

There are many different types of Detention Roofs on the market, each with its own merits. A single project can benefit from a combination of different technologies.
