1. INS ‘Himgiri’, Indian Navy’s advanced P17A-class stealth frigate, launched at GRSE yard
-INS Himgiri‘, alias ‘Project 17A’ — a Nilgiri-class frigate for the Indian Navy — was launched on Monday (i.e. December 14) at the Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) facility here. The ‘INS Himgiri‘, which is a follow-up on the Project 17 Shivalik-class frigate, is the first of three such Project 17A (P17A)-class advanced stealth warships that the armed forces have contracted the GRSE to build.
The Project 17A Stealth Frigate ‘INS Himgiri’ was launched at the GRSE facility in Kolkata in the presence of Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat on this day, news agencies reported.
According to Defpost, the GRSE had laid the keel for the vessel two years back on November 9, 2018.
‘Project 17A’
The Nilgiri-class frigate or ‘Project 17A (P17A)’-class is a follow-up on the currently-operational ‘Project 17 (P17)’ or the Shivalik-class stealth frigates.

2. Maharashtra Offers To Help Preserve Navy Warship Viraat, Writes To Centre
-In a letter to the Defence Ministry, Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has said the Maharashtra government is “happy to cooperate in restoring and preserving the historical ship” INS Viraat, which served as India’s aircraft carrier.
“It was with great sadness and concern [that] I read that the scrapping of the historic INS Viraat has been initiated at Alang in Gujarat,” Ms Chaturvedi said.
The letter, which asks the Defence Ministry for a no-objection certificate to preserve Viraat, comes at a time when the decommissioned warship is being pulled ashore by a ship-breaker in Alang before it is destroyed for scrap.

3.Upgraded India-made tank ‘Arjun’ still awaits Army order
-‘Arjun’ may have ultimately vanquished ‘Bhishma’ in the battlefield of Kurukshetra, but the Army still does not have faith in the former. The 13-lakh force continues to drag its feet in approving the long-pending order for 118 ‘improved’ Arjun Mark-1A main-battle tanks.
The DRDO, however, is confident that the Rs 6,400 crore indent to produce the indigenous tanks will be placed on the Heavy Vehicles Factory (HVF) at Avadi before this fiscal ends on March 31. The mood is buoyant after PM Narendra Modi took aride on the Arjun in Jaisalmer last month.
“The Mark-1A tanks have better firepower, mobility, protection and endurance than the first 124 Arjuns inducted by the Army over a decade ago. As per HVF, each Mark-1A tank will cost Rs 54 crore,” said a defence scientist.
But the Army is not convinced yet. The force continues to bank upon the Russian-origin T-90S tanks, christened ‘Bhishma’, for its “shock and awe” capabilities on the western front. In November 2019, another Rs 20,000 crore indent was placed on HVF for 464 more upgraded T-90S tanks to add to the 1,193 such tanks already inducted.
