2023 Wednesday Plenary Session: The 2023 UN Water Conference: Supporting Commitments With Evidence

Panelists: Dr. Barbara Evans, Dr. Cecilia Scharp, Dr. Daniele
Lantagne, Prof. Kwabena Biritwum, Lisa Rudge
Moderator: Eric Omwanza Momanyi

The UN 2023 Water Conference took place in March of this year and was attended by UN Member States and development partners.
In response to a call for voluntary commitments to make up the Water Action Agenda, over 800 commitments were made.
As they seek to meet the commitments, Members States and their development partners need to know what works
and what is most effective. They need a reliable evidence base to design approaches and determine whether what
they are doing is the best way to accelerate progress and making lasting, sustainable change. We tend to focus on the
health evidence but need research into effective approaches for building institutional strength and human capacity,
and for creating the enabling environment for progress in the WASH sector. We need to know where there are gaps
in the evidence base, and find ways to fill them, working together. This plenary session will explore the nature of the
commitments, and what we as a WASH community can do to shrink the gaps in the supportive evidence base.
