The dystopian literary genre

Following my video on Utopia, this short video takes a look at how dystopia is the exact opposite and examines characteristics of the dystopian genre. There is a quick overview of some examples of past and current novels and films in this genre.

This film was made for my fifth year - grade thirteen students at Liceo Musicale Bonporti in Trento, Italy, where schools are still closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A perfect time to study dystopia...

I invite my students to reflect on past examples of dystopia (fare collegamenti per la maturità), consider current ominous examples of how some societies throughout the world are verging on dystopia. You could also reflect on how teenagers live a sort of dystopia as they start to chafe against the restrictions of parental control. I dare say this is also a dystopia reality during lockdown, and it will be interesting to see how we emerge from this apocalyptic time once lock downs have lifted and we try to restart the economy and reclaim some semblance of normalcy.
