The Great Wall - The Wall of Unity
The legend of Meng Jiangnu is one of the most famous and heartbreaking stories of the Great Wall.
It is said that during the cruel Qin Dynasty, a young woman named Meng Jiangnu was married to a scholar, Fan Qiliang. Their happiness was short-lived; just three days after their wedding, Fan Qiliang was seized by imperial officers and sent north to work on the endless, brutal construction of the Great Wall.
As winter approached, Meng Jiangnu, missing her husband terribly, decided to make the perilous journey to the Wall herself to bring him warm clothes. She traveled for months, enduring mountains and deserts, driven only by love.
When she finally reached the construction site, she was met with devastating news: her husband had died from exhaustion and cold, and his body was buried somewhere beneath the vast, anonymous foundation of the Wall.
Overcome with sorrow, Meng Jiangnu sat down and wept. She cried for three days and three nights, her grief so profound it shook the very stones. Suddenly, a long section of the Great Wall shuddered and collapsed, revealing the bones of countless workers—and among them, the skeleton of her beloved Fan Qiliang.
After giving him a proper burial, Meng Jiangnu, her purpose fulfilled but her spirit broken, chose to end her own life in the sea, a final, despairing act against the tyranny that had stolen her love. Her legend lives on as a tragic reminder of the immense human cost paid for the great stone dragon snaking across China.
