High fat meal MPO & blood flow

High fat meal causes activation of neutrophils. Neutrophils secrete MPO (MyeloPerOxidase) into blood. MPO is VERY positively charged = cationic. MPO binds to glycocalyx (GC) of endothelial cells (EC). Glycocalyx is VERY negatively charged. Upon MPO binding to GC, the GC collapses down. Collapse of GC then exposes neutrophil binding proteins called selectins. At baseline the GC is about 600 nm high, so slelectins (50 nm high are hidden). When GC collapses, the selectins are exposed, and neutrophils bind to them. This recruits more neutrophils & can lead to a vicious cycle; and to clot formation. The purpose of all this is for the immune system to fight infections. Excess activation of this process from eating a high fat diet increases the risk of symptomatic atherosclerosis.
