Robert Duvall on 50 Years of Acting, What Brando Taught Him & His Favorite Scenes (2010)
We take a look at the past to shape our future.
In 2010, Robert Duvall discussed 50 years of acting, what he learned watching Marlon Brando, and why Augustus McCrae was his favorite role.
On acting: "I try to be truthful. Keep it down to what we're doing now. Bobby Duvall and Charlie Rose just talking and listening. Somebody said, 'You just played yourself.' I said, yeah, try it. See how easy it is."
On what Brando taught him: "Before the take, during the take, after the take, there was sameness. No beginning. It was all the same. A continuum. I said, boy, this is interesting acting."
On directors then and now: "True Grit, the director said, 'When I say action, tense up.' That's not the way. Today a good director says give me less. Let the process take you to the result rather than playing the result."
On Augustus McCrae: "Let the English play Hamlet and King Lear. I'll play Augustus McCrae. A great character in literature. A true American character."
On becoming the character: "You don't become another thing. In the back of your head, something approves of what you're doing. So it's acting. You have to start from yourself."
