The Five Most Illogical People You Meet on the Internet

Believe me... there are more than just five.

Emma is just trying to post an article to her blog. The title of the article is “Why I Believe God Exists” and gives evidence for her position. She just hopes that people will read it and give quality feedback and intelligent arguments, is that too much to ask? But when she’s about to post it, the essences of online logical fallacies show up. Get the popcorn ready!

This is a million.5x45+300 divided by a purple potato times infinity percent- Alisa Childer's idea. This entire concept and idea was hers and is based on her article "The 5 Most Illogical People You Will Meet on the Internet." Super shoutout to her for letting me run with this article and idea. Your FACE is amazing!

Meet Red Herring- The logical fallacy that LOVES to change the subject to take the focus off of the actual point. Called a 'Red Herring' as a visual for a strong-smelling fish used to throw hounds off the scent, when someone is guilty of this fallacy, they are changing the subject, using irrelevant information to distract you, sending you down a rabbit trail you never intended. (Points to you if you can guess what Red's earrings are made out of!)

Meet Character Assassinator/Ad Hominem- The logical fallacy that we see all too often that attacks the person and their shortcomings instead of discussing the actual argument. They love to name-call and accuse rather than actually face the real argument.

Meet Self-Defeater- If they only knew how they sounded... This is someone who defeats their own position... BY their own position! The kicker? They don't even realize it. This fallacy fails to meet its own standard and cannot live up to its own criteria. (Shout-out to my 7-year old for letting me destroy her headband with a cheap arrow and to our pet chickens for lending some feathers. You a real one.)

Meet Strawman- This fallacy just loves to misrepresent others' arguments because they're easier to attack than the real one. They end up arguing against a false or distorted version of the argument rather than the argument itself.

Meet Gish Galloper- This fallacy is truly a magician of words, flamethrowing objections, questions, and arguments to overwhelm you, making it impossible to actually combat each argument in a reasonable amount of time. Giddy up. They have a false superiority of their position as a result. (Gish and Red are basically besties.)

In addition to new age confusion in the church, sexual, moral, and theological confusion abound in our culture. Christ-followers are called to combat these false ideas that stand in the way of the Gospel. To effectively engage with this post-Christian culture, you will need a deeply integrated understanding of theology, philosophy, and apologetics—the bedrock of a degree from Southern Evangelical Seminary and Bible College (SES). SES is actually where I currently attend, and they offer accredited degrees and certificates that use this integrated approach to equip you to proclaim the Gospel, engage the culture, and defend the truth.
