How to cover melasma without a cake face
Updated melasma routine.
Rules to cover melasma:
1- Throw away the notion that flat, matte, full on coverage is what is needed. Flat and matte only make the melasma look gray and like a shadow under makeup, but do not cover it. Look for products that offer luminosity or a glow.
2- Use light reflection to bounce light off the surface of the melasma to make it appear as if it is not there. Layering is the key. Start with a light reflecting primer followed by a luminous foundation and a radiant setting powder. Only mattify where necessary.
3- Go a shade darker and warmer over the pigmented areas. Most people think a lighter shade will lighten it and cover, but a lighter shade only dulls the pigmentation and gives the opposite result.
4- Don’t be so hard on yourself. Learn to love the skin you are in and remember everyone has something they are self-conscious about.
5- Use what you have. The steps are what is most important, not the products. In my last video, so many got hung up on what products I used. Use any product you have that fits the criteria.
6- Remember, this is what works for me and may not work for you. I have been a makeup artist for 13 years, and this is what I have found is best for me.
Steps to cover melasma:
1- Exfoliate your skin. You want to start with smooth skin. Texture further emphasizes discoloration. I like Paula’s Choice bha liquid.
2- Moisturize with a good moisturizer that works well under makeup. My favorite under makeup moisturizer is Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream or Juice Beauty Age Defy Cream. They both provide a priming quality on the skin that helps makeup adhere.
3- Use a product with spf to prevent further damage. My favorite is Julep No Excuses.
4- Apply a light reflecting primer over pigmented areas. My favorites are Becca Backlight, Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow, and Laura Mercier Radiant.
5- Use two shades of foundation. One that is slightly darker and warmer than your skin. We all have that one we bought that was too orange. Use it over the pigmented areas. The second will match your skin and be applied over the first one and the whole face.
6- Conceal under eyes and where needed with your favorite concealer.
7- Set the makeup with a light dusting of a translucent powder. I like Ben Nye neutral set or Laura Mercier.
8- Finish the makeup with a dusting of a radiant or glowy finishing powder. There are sooo many on the market.
9- Apply your favorite setting spray
