Fall Issue Premiere | Pop-Up Magazine
For the premiere of our Fall Issue, we bring you three stories by writer Aida Osman (BIG MOUTH, BETTY, KEEP IT!), filmmakers Vanessa Carr and Josh Gleason, and artist Christine Sun Kim (maybe you saw her sign at the Super Bowl?). Together, they dare you to not laugh, reimagine the meaning of home, and change the way you see everything — including our show.
POP-UP MAGAZINE’s Fall Issue takes one day at a time, with new stories unfolding over a week, from October 12-16, sponsored by Instacart. Check out the lineup, meet the contributors, RSVP, and follow along at https://popupmagazine.com/watch.
STORIES
01:18 WELCOME TO THE FALL ISSUE FROM ANNA MARTIN
02:17 HOW TO LAUGH WHEN NOTHING IS FUNNY
How can we find humor given the current state of the world? Comedian Aida Osman called up friends and fellow Black comics Jay Jurden, Yedoye Travis, and Shalewa Sharpe to find out.
09:14 [CLOSER CAPTIONS]
You might not think much about closed captions, but artist Christine Sun Kim does. And here’s a not-so-well-kept secret: They suck. Christine fixes that in this original story featuring footage she captured and captioned herself.
Video description and transcript: https://pastebin.pl/view/471fc4d3
STORY NOTE: there is no voiceover in Christine’s signed introduction. There is a light orchestral score with violin, piano, and vibraphone tones throughout the video.
16:54 NOMADS
At the dawn of her golden years, Jo Lynn left behind her husband and house in Idaho to live out of a van and join a roaming collective of senior nomads. Filmmakers Vanessa Carr and Josh Gleason went along for the ride.
29:05 CREDITS

AIDA OSMAN is a comedian, a writer for Netflix’s BIG MOUTH and HBO’s BETTY, and a co-host of KEEP IT!, a podcast from Crooked Media. If you laughed watching this story, we highly recommend you follow Aida on Instagram and Twitter at @shutupaida.
CHRISTINE SUN KIM explores the conceptual aspect of sound by connecting it to acts of drawing, painting, and performance. Her projects include using the audience’s voice as her own, conducting a group of people to “sing” with facial movements, and composing visual scores with sign language and musical symbols.
VANESSA CARR has worked as a director of photography for a decade, filming documentaries and series for PBS, HBO, Disney+, Showtime, FX, and others. She holds a master’s in journalism from UC Berkeley. NOMADS is her first feature documentary as a director.
JOSH GLEASON is a documentary filmmaker whose work has been screened at festivals across the country and featured in THE ATLANTIC. He’s directed and produced programs for PBS, including episodes of AMERICAN EXPERIENCE and FINDING YOUR ROOTS.
