The Biggest Kickboxing Controversy: Reviewing Giorgio Petrosyan vs. Petchmorakot Petchyindee

Giorgio Petrosyan vs. Petchmorakot Petchyindee has caused tremendous controversy. From what I’m seeing, it’s the biggest I’ve seen in kickboxing. Due to a high number of request and the mass confusion I'm seeing from the community, I had to share my thoughts.

Trust me when I say that I have tremendous respect for Petchyindee. They have done amazing things for Muay Thai and it is very clear that they care very much about their athletes. I am also a fan of Petchmorakot. He was chosen to be Saenchai’s last stadium opponent due to his toughness and skill, and he's Saenchai’s last loss for a reason.

Everyone was counting him out against the pound for pound king of kickboxing—Giorgio Petrosyan. I knew that was a mistake. In this close fight, people have rallied behind each fighter. First, people made noise about the split win being a bad call. Then when the fight was declared no contest and a rematch was announced, people got even more upset.

From seeing multiple discussions amongst the Muay Thai and Kickboxing communities, I am certain that there is confusion on the rules. I don't think the fouls were intentional, but there was a clear breach that would've gotten point deductions in any kickboxing organization.

In my opinion, if this was a Muay Thai fight, Petchmorakot won. But this is kickboxing, and Giorgio won the kickboxing fight. Overturns are always polarizing. But what if they’re necessary sometimes?

If high standards of review can be upheld fairly across the board, this is GOOD for the sport. Is a no-contest and rematch really that bad in a highly controversial close fight? FYI, this is NOT the first overturn in ONE. The first one I know of is Sagetdao in an MMA match, something essentially NO ONE talked about.

This controversy has caused a big rift in the Muay Thai and Kickboxing community, so I'm hoping it brings more a more healthy discourse.
