Strange but True History - Oklahoma City Bombing

The Main Theories:
Additional Co-Conspirators ("John Doe 2”)
Several witnesses reported seeing a second person with McVeigh around the time of the bombing, whom investigators called "John Doe 2." The FBI later arrested Michael Brescia, who resembled the composite sketch, but released him after determining he wasn't involved.

Government Foreknowledge / False Flag
Some theories allege that the bombing was perpetrated by government forces to frame and stigmatize the militia movement, which had grown following the controversial federal handling of the Ruby Ridge and Waco incidents. Other theories claim President Clinton either knew of the bombing in advance or approved it to regain public support.

The Bomb Couldn't Have Done That Alone
Physicist Samuel T. Cohen, known as the primary inventor of the neutron bomb, stated that he didn't believe a fertilizer bomb was capable of causing the observed destruction. Air Force Brigadier General Benton K. Partin also expressed the opinion that additional explosive charges must have been planted inside the building.

A Second Bomb
One theory focuses on local news channels reporting the existence of a second and third bomb within the first hours of the explosion. Theorists also point to nearby seismographs that recorded two tremors, believing it indicates two bombs.

Middle East / Foreign Connection
Journalist Jayna Davis wrote a New York Times bestseller presenting a theory linking the Oklahoma City bombers to agents of Iraq and Al-Qaeda under Iranian state sponsorship.

The Unmatched Leg
There has been speculation that an unmatched leg found at the bombing site may have belonged to an unidentified additional bomber — either someone in the building at the time, or a body McVeigh left in the back of the truck.

The Military Lookalike — "John Doe 2”
In June 1995, authorities identified a 23-year-old soldier as the man in the John Doe No. 2 sketch and cleared him of any involvement. He resembled the composite and wore similar clothes — including a Carolina Panthers cap. Helenair The mystery has never been fully put to rest for a lot of people — much like the grassy knoll in Dallas.

WHO GAINED
1. The Clinton Administration / Federal Government
Many theorists argue the bombing served as a catalyst to nudge the United States toward expanded federal authority. Critics interpreted this as a subtle step toward a more militarized internal security apparatus, echoing concerns that would later surface after the passage of the Patriot Act following 9/11.

2. The Anti-Militia / Anti-Extremist Legislative Agenda
The theory suggests McVeigh was used as a scapegoat while the real goal was passing antiterrorism legislation.
The Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996 was passed directly in the wake of the bombing — expanding federal surveillance and prosecution powers significantly.

3. The ATF
Interestingly, the ATF had been under intense congressional scrutiny and faced possible abolishment before the bombing. The Murrah building housed ATF offices, and after the attack, the agency's budget and political standing were quickly restored. Critics found the timing suspicious.

4. McVeigh Himself — Ideologically
From McVeigh's own perspective, he believed he was the winner in a sense. He planned the attack to coincide with the second anniversary of the Waco siege and the 220th anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, comparing his actions to the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki — reasoning it was necessary to prevent more lives from being lost. He saw himself as igniting a revolution against federal overreach.

The Bitter Irony
The bombing actually backfired on the broader anti-government militia movement McVeigh claimed to represent. Public sympathy swung heavily toward the federal government, the militia movement was discredited nationwide, and it handed Washington exactly the political leverage needed to expand federal law enforcement powers — the very thing McVeigh claimed to be fighting against.

The Theory
The claim is basically that McVeigh's execution was faked — that he was injected with harmless substances, a doctor falsely declared him dead, and he was given a new identity, either as a reward for being a scapegoat or as part of a witness protection-style deal. The "evidence" people point to: supposedly his eyes were open when he was declared dead, which theorists claim is impossible with lethal injection sedatives.

What Actually Happened
McVeigh's execution was broadcast live to the families of his victims — making a fake death significantly harder to pull off. Hundreds of people witnessed it directly or via closed circuit feed. There's also an interesting wrinkle that fuels some of this confusion. Michael Fortier, McVeigh's accomplice, was released in 2006 for good behavior and placed into the Witness Protection Program and given a new identity. Some people may have conflated Fortier's very real new identity with theories about McVeigh.
