The Aleutian Islands are a remote chain of volcanic islands in Alaska.

In June 1942, Japanese forces invaded and occupied two islands: Attu and Kiska.

The invasion was part of Japan’s strategy to divert U.S. attention from Midway and to prevent U.S. advances into the North Pacific.
