This is the true, tragic story of Ham the Astrochimp.
Before humans ever went to space, NASA sent Ham into the unknown on January 31, 1961. During training, he faced electric shocks, and during launch, a rocket malfunction subjected him to a terrifying 17 Gs of force.
Despite the terror, he completed his tasks perfectly and survived. But instead of freedom, his reward was spending the next 22 years of his life locked inside a zoo enclosure while the world moved on.
A sad reminder of the forgotten heroes of space exploration.
