Last week I was appointed as Abogado Consultor by Consulado General de México en Sacramento. Below is an excerpt of the speech made by Consul Carlos González Gutiérrez at the small reception held at my firm — it does a wonderful job of communicating the importance of this role.

"... As you know, many of these Mexicans have crossed the border and come to the U.S., under very difficult circumstances and facing very serious dangers pursuing their dreams. In spite of that, they manage to establish their homes, have their families and set their interests in this country; however, they always fear that everything can be taken away from them. The lack of knowledge of the English language, the laws, their rights and obligations and their undocumented condition makes them a very vulnerable population. They often are victims of abuse, fraud, threats, retaliation and discrimination. They fear going to the authorities to report these conducts and claim respect for their rights. They find themselves helpless.

It is for this reason that the Consulates of Mexico in the U.S. require a group of professional experts who can provide specialized legal advice and appropriate legal representation to the consulates and the community of Mexicans in the U.S.

For this same purpose, each consulate appoints respected and renowned local attorneys to be the Consulate's consultant attorneys or Abogados Consultores. These attorneys become a very powerful tool for the Consulates in the performance of their protection functions. Many qualifications are required to become an Abogado Consultor and the candidates' credentials are thoroughly considered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mexico.

Today, I am very happy to announce that our friend, Eric Ratinoff, has been appointed 'Abogado Consultor' of the Consulate General of Mexico in Sacramento. As you all know Eric is an extraordinary attorney who is very committed with the community and with a very strong empathy towards the Latino population, and especially towards the Mexican diaspora." - Consul Carlos González Gutiérrez
