Words matter with Kel Richards: ‘Under the pump’ explained
Broadcaster and wordsmith Kel Richards has discussed the origins and the meaning of the phrase “under the pump” with Sky News host Peta Credlin.
“It means obviously being under high pressure, at risk, working hard and worrying,” Mr Richards said.
“[It] goes back to the days of sailing ships when they started to take water it was all hand to the pump, working hard at risk. I think that’s where it comes from.”
