Why Some Practices Can Make Dysregulation Worse

Stillness can feel unsafe if you've had a history of trauma. If your nervous system is so used to being on the lookout for danger, and having to be on guard, stillness may be a cue to your nervous system that you're vulnerable, and you need to get out of there. This is why some practices, tools, and classes can make dysregulation worse.

Forcing yourself to be still and to power through can actually lead to more dissociation and it can elevate panic as well. Classes where you feel you have no choice whether to move around or not, or a class that's a one-size-fits-all approach may not be the best fit for you.

If the message that you continue to receive is that you're doing something wrong, or you just need to try harder, perhaps this just isn't the right class for you right now.

There is no one perfect practice or exercise for every single person to use all of the time. But you have the most insight as to what is right for you, and what's not. The nervous system loves choice, and re-regulation comes from listening to it and from honoring its needs.

⭐ Have you experienced certain tools or practices that increased dysregulation unexpectedly? We’d love to hear your reflections in the comments below.
