Marisa Tomei Discovers the Origin of Her Ancestor’s Last Name

Marisa Tomei learns her third great-grandfather’s last name of D’Ignoti translates to “of unknown parentage.” In the early 1800s, roughly 70% of babies in Sicily were abandoned in places like churches due to overwhelming poverty in the surrounding region.

#FindingYourRoots airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on PBS. In the February 18 episode, Henry Louis Gates, Jr. explores the roots of talk show-host Jimmy Kimmel and actors Marisa Tomei and John Turturro, introducing them to ancestors who made immense sacrifices to bring their families from Italy to America.
