Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Lima's streets on Monday, following the resignation of interim President Manuel Merino and the Congress' election of Francisco Sagasti as a new interim president.

"It is a moment of reflection, it is a moment to ask ourselves where it was that we lost our way. It is a time to amend and it is a time to move decisively towards a better future for all Peruvians," said Sagasti speaking outside the Congress.

Janet Quiroga, one of the demonstrators supported the new interim leader, calling him a "professional," while another one, Alejandra Carpio, said that she wanted dismissed Martin Vizcarra to come back.

Merino, who took office less than a week ago after the dismissal of Martin Vizcarra, announced his "irrevocable" resignation in a televised address to the nation on Sunday, minutes after the Congress demanded that he quits his post.

SOT, Francisco Sagasti, Interim President of Peru (Spanish): "It is not time for celebration, we have too many problems, tragedies and difficulties to be celebrating. It is a moment of reflection, it is a moment to ask ourselves where it was that we lost our way. It is time to amend and it is time to move decisively towards a better future for all Peruvians."

SOT, Francisco Sagasti, Interim President of Peru (Spanish): "We have enormous tasks in our country just before the bicentennial of independence when we turn 200 years old and begin our third century of independent living. This board of directors, this Congress, is committed to making our country stand on the right foot, in the best possible way so that instead of a time of regrets or tragedy, yes, the bicentennial of independence is a reason for celebration."

SOT, Francisco Sagasti, Interim President of Peru (Spanish): "But I would not be here if it had not been for the effort and sacrifice of five years of trying to build a decent policy with a new party, and I thank all my colleagues who appointed me to this position."

SOT, Janet Quiroga, Demonstrator (Spanish): "I know he (Sagasti) is professional. I just read about him. Let's hope he's not just another corrupted man, not another one that takes bribes. We expect a change for the country in these eight months that remain."

SOT, Alejandra Carpio, Demonstrator (Spanish): "I disagree. I want Congress to be closed and Vizcarra to continue to finish his term. We don't want another president."
