Trip to Montenegro. August 2021. Part 2 | Budva Old Town. Kotor Old town. Boat tour. Perast town

Budva is a town divided by history. When the Old Town, surrounded by its medieval walls became too small for a growing population it spilled out along the shoreline on either side of it. Its beauty is enhanced by the small bays indenting the blue Adriatic Sea in front of it and the dramatic, grey, limestone mountains behind it.

A very pleasant approach to Budva, a resort in Montenegro is a gentle stroll along the sea front or Budva Riviera as it is now known. Colourful little boats bob on the surface of the Adriatic Sea along the quay of Budva port. Somewhat overshadowed by the luxury yachts further along the quay they offer trips to the off-shore islands of Sveti Stefan and Sveti Nikola. Boat taxis are also available, a lovely way to return to the hotels around the adjacent bays after some good-humoured fare bargaining.

Kotor Old Town

If you arrive to Kotor Old Town in the middle of the day you might be overwhelmed with how busy it is.

The place is literally jammed with people, all the restaurant tables are busy and sometimes you need to wait in a queue to get through a narrow lane (true story).

But at around 4pm everything changes, the cruise ships sail away and the Kotor Old Town gets pleasantly spacious.

Of course there are still people around but enough for you to enjoy the place and actually see something.

For the place that can be walked through in 5 minutes Kotor Old Town has so many attractions that it will keep you busy for quite a while.

Kotor itself was first mentioned in 3rd century BC and across the old town you can find the overview of roman, gothic, renaissance and baroque architecture.

It is one of the best preserved towns in south-east Europe!

Compared to Kotor, Perast is much smaller, far more laid back, and in the evening it becomes dead quiet. It’s the kind of place many tourists add a quick side trip and wish they’d devoted more space in their itinerary to. Without a doubt, it is one of the most photogenic places in Montenegro!

Perast is extremely popular in summer, and the tiny village can become crowded with tour groups. Visit in late spring or early autumn to enjoy fine weather, just warm enough to swim, and far fewer people. But do note that things start shutting down around mid-October, and don’t get going again until around May.

Conte restaurant. Located in the heart of a tiny, UNESCO protected town of Perast. In the authentic baroque ambience of this small settlement, you will truly experience the best that Montenegro has to offer: a combination of tradition, magical natural beauty and a unique gastronomic experience. Cuisine is based on fresh local ingredients, traditional recipes and constant creative refreshments of the presentation and taste of the dishes. Wine list contains local, regional and wines from all over the world. Great place to have a dinner with a view.
