1. Various of people walking on the street
2. SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Mesut Ozdeger, 48, Diyarbakir resident:
"I think it would be great if today was declared a national holiday. Because from now on, the blood of brethren won’t be shed, there won’t be any more martyrs (meaning Turkish troops), no more protesting. Other countries are working on artificial intelligence and we are 20 years behind, trying to get rid of this problem. Thank God, today it’s over."
3. Mid of people on the street
4. SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Tekin Ergin, 49, Diyarbakir resident:
"Turkey has been tired of this war for 40 years, the people of this region are tired of this war. The PKK’s decision to disband is the right decision and a timely decision, it was sustainable."
5. Wide of a street
6. SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Mehmet Talip Ozer, 65, Diyarbakir resident:
"When there’s a good life, civilization, culture, education, why should we waste our children? Why should the people suffer an economic coup? Why should people be miserable?"
7. Vahap Coskun taking a book from a shelf
8. Close of hand taking notes
9. SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Vahap Coskun, Dicle University Faculty of Law:
"The first (reason for PKK’s decision) is the integration of the (PKK’s) structure in Syria (referring to the Syrian Kurdish People’s Protection Units, or YPG) with (the government in) Damascus. This was extremely important for the PKK. The acceleration of developments there (Syria) also accelerated the process. The second is that it accepts that the world has changed. In other words, it is extremely difficult to wage a national struggle with weapons in this age. It has expressed this in all its statements. The third is the change in Kurdish sociology. In other words, the Kurds in Turkey now want to make progress in politics. As such, the PKK stated that it has completed its mission and that the struggle from now on will continue in a political form."
10. Mid of women looking at clothes
11. SOUNDBITE (Turkish) Vahap Coskun, Dicle University Faculty of Law:
"Ending a 40-year conflict is a great political success for the government. On the other hand, undoubtedly this process will also cause the government to get closer to the (pro-Kurdish) DEM party. If the government wants to make changes to the constitution, wishes to do so, or is prepared to do so, then the steps that have to be taken will make the process of constitutional amendments easier and more doable (with support from the DEM party)."

STORYLINE:
Residents of the mainly Kurdish southeastern city of Diyarbakir expressed hope Monday over the PKK Kurdish militant group's announcement that it will disband and disarm as part of a new peace initiative with Turkey, ending four decades of armed conflict.
The decision by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which promises to put an end to one of the longest insurgencies in the Middle East and could have significant impact in Turkey, Syria and Iraq, was announced by the Firat News Agency, a media outlet close to the group.
"Turkey has been tired of this war for 40 years," said one resident. Another, welcoming the news, said "I think it would be great if today was declared a national holiday. Because from now on, the blood of brethren won’t be shed, there won’t be any more martyrs."
The conflict between Turkey and the PKK has spilled over into northern Iraq and northern Syria, with Turkey carrying out numerous incursions into the neighboring regions. The PKK is listed as a terror group by Turkey and its Western allies.
