Malcolm Gladwell, N.Y. Times Best Selling Author and one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People, spoke about the importance of humble leadership regarding the turmoil and protests surrounding Wall Street today.
Especially in today's tough economic conditions, Gladwell's presentation called for leaders who remain humble despite their success.
"I want someone who understands that they are one small piece of a very large complicated picture and they need to understand the importance of humility," Gladwell said. "They need to rely on a team of like-minded and properly motivated people in order to get us through difficult times. And if they don't have that attitude, I don't have any interest in them."
Gladwell, author of NY Times best sellers such as "The Tipping Point" and "Blink," was brought to campus as part of the university's Cultural Enrichment Series. Gladwell has an incomparable gift for interpreting new ideas in the social sciences and making them understandable, practical and valuable to business and general audiences alike.
Besides his speech at 8 p.m., he also participated in a Business and Leadership Forum for members of PTP Next, a group of young professionals and business leaders in the Triad. The forum featured Dr. Nido Qubein, president of HPU, as well as Darren Hardy, publisher and editorial director of "SUCCESS Magazine" and author of "The Compound Effect -- Multiplying Your Results. One Simple Step at a Time."
"Malcolm Gladwell's visit truly provided our campus community with a tremendous opportunity to connect with a captivating individual who shared innovative ideas on how social change develops and why this is important for successful entrepreneurs," Qubein says.
