History of the Precursors.
Before the Covenant, Humanity and the Forerunners existed; the Precursors presided over the galaxy. As transentient beings, they could create life as easily as they could erase it. Tapping into ‘neural physics’, the Precursors could alter the fabric of the universe, creating star roads to traverse the galaxy. Seeking beings to assist with their ‘Mantle of Responsibility’, they created the Forerunners. However, as the Forerunners developed as a species, the Precursors deemed them unworthy of the Mantle, instead passing this responsibility down to one of their other creations: Humanity. The Forerunners rejected this. War broke out, ending with the destruction of almost all Precursors, with the survivors turning themselves into dust to wait for a safe time to reconstitute themselves. However, this dust became corrupted, and when it was found by humanity thousands of years later, it manifested as an infection known as ‘the Flood’. It was an almost indestructible hivemind that would spread quickly, mutating any living thing it touched, seeking revenge for the atrocities the Forerunners had committed against the Precursors. And at the helm is the last surviving precursor: the Primordial.
