Sheffield Lost Stations of the Blackburn Valley

Sheffield Lost Stations of the Blackburn Valley.

We continue our story of Sheffield's lost railway stations by making our way up the Blackburn Valley line from Meadowhall, north towards Chapeltown.

The disused railway route towards Barnsley was formerly the South Yorkshire Railway, before being taken on by the Manchester, Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway (later Great Central Railway).

Our first station is Meadow Hall and Wincobank. Opened in 1868 as Meadow Hall (two words). In 1899 it was renamed Meadow Hall and Wincobank. It closed to passengers in 1953 although the line stayed in use for small freight movements until 1987. The station house and offices remain fully intact and are now a private residence. However looking a little overgrown from the trackbed side now.

A similar story for our next station - Grange Lane. Built at the junction with the colliery branch that went off to the Grange Colliery at Kimberworth. The station opened in 1855 and closed in 1953. The station house remains, nicely kept with a few plaques on the wall. There once was sizable platforms, a goods shed and signal box, which can be seen in old photos.

Further up the line is Ecclesfield East, which has now been demolished and fenced off making it difficult to view the site.

Next up is Chapeltown on the next episode.
