Montreal’s Victoria Bridge — A Victorian Engineering Giant

When it opened, Montreal’s Victoria Bridge was called the “Eighth Wonder of the World.”

Built in the Victorian era and stretching nearly three kilometres across the Saint Lawrence River, it permanently connected Montreal to the South Shore and transformed the city into a major North American transport hub.

Designed by British engineer Robert Stephenson, the bridge was engineered to survive brutal Canadian winters — and more than 160 years later, it’s still in use today.

Follow for more short stories about the world’s most fascinating landmarks.
