Tim Richmond Helps Drought-Stricken Farmers | 1986 Hayride 500

In the summer of 1986, the South was struck was a long drought. The hot temperatures and no rain killed crops and hay for livestock. To help southern farmers feed their animals, people in NASCAR organized the Hayride 500. On an off-week after Talladega, NASCAR teams would take their tractor trailers and drive up to Ohio to bring hay back to the south. Drivers like Richard Petty, David Pearson, Ricky Rudd, and Phil Barkdoll made the trip in support. Tim Richmond was the only driver who actually drove a truck to Ohio and back.

The trip left Charlotte Motor Speedway on Friday August 1, 1986 and made it to Columbus, Ohio by that evening. On the morning of August 2nd, they left Ohio and returned to North Carolina that evening where the hay was unloaded and distributed to farmers. On August 5th, Tim Richmond was in Stafford, Connecticut for a race. See clips from that race here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCP9A8w_-Zs
