On the frontlines of an effort to save Arctic ice

We sent Chloe Williams, a freelance journalist based in Yellowknife, and Gavin John, a photographer and videographer, up to Cambridge Bay in Nunavut, Canada, to check out a bold experiment.

About seven kilometres outside of town, researchers from the U.K. company Real Ice were wrapping up their second winter of tests. Their big idea? To drill holes into the Arctic ice and pump seawater to the surface to make the sea ice thicker and potentially combat the effects of global warming. If it’s thick enough, it could stay frozen for longer — and maybe even survive the summer. But will it work? Only time will tell.
