Here we show you key moments of the Shoton Festival in Lhasa, Tibet. From the early morning in Drepung Monastery to the afternoon in Norbulingka, this is how the real Tibetans celebrate the Shoton Festival.

The unveiling of the 500-square-meter embroidered Thangka portrait of the Buddha is the highlight of the Shoton Festival and marks the beginning of the week-long holiday. Thousands of Tibetans coming from all over Tibet to get a blessing from the holy Thangka.

After the most special ceremony of the Shoton Festival, we join the locals to move on to Norbulingka to enjoy a picnic with a yogurt banquet, which is the original Tibetan meaning of ‘Shoton’. Here you can taste authentic Tibetan yogurt and experience the local Tibetan people’s love for their family and friends and their optimistic attitude towards life.

In addition, the Tibetan opera competition is also an important part of the Shoton Festival. There were not only local Tibetan performers, but also teams from Qinghai, Sichuan, and Yunnan.
