Barking gecko

In the Namib desert in southern Africa, you don’t need to listen too closely to hear a barking gecko. Their loud cackling calls, which are used to attract mates, often scare tourists.

For the longest time, scientists believed the yelps belonged to one gecko species. But after one researcher scoured the dunes of the Namib desert for new specimens, he and his team discovered six new species of barking geckos.
