About the book: "In the Face of the Sun" is told through a dual storyline set in 1968 and 1928, two periods of enormous change and turmoil in America, through the character of Daisy Washington. In 1928, Daisy is a dissatisfied chambermaid working at the Somerville Hotel, and in 1968 she’s the audacious Aunt Daisy accompanying her troubled niece on a road trip on Route 66 from Chicago back to LA. The two women embark on this journey from Illinois to California during the height of the Civil Rights movement – a cleaver framework through which the novel highlights the vast differences in Black experience across America. As diversity and inclusion conversations dominate the modern entertainment industry, Bryce’s novel peels back the curtain on life for Black Americans in the early days of the film industry, where everyone from actors to activists found themselves inhabiting the world of celebrity—and observed by those on the sidelines.
