Adapted from the story of Dr. Mudd, the physician who attended John Wilkes Booth, assassin of President Lincoln. This narrative was famously adapted in John Ford's 1936 masterpiece The Prisoner Of Shark Island.

Set in the aftermath of the American Civil War, Hellgate follows Gilman S. Hanley (Sterling Hayden), a veterinarian and former Confederate soldier who has since embraced the Union. When he offers aid to a wounded man who turns out to be a wanted Confederate guerrilla, Hanley is unjustly accused of being an accomplice and a spy. He is swiftly convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment at the notorious Hellgate Prison in the scorching New Mexico desert.

This isolated, brutal facility is run by the sadistic Lieutenant Tod Voorhees (Ward Bond). Hanley must endure inhumane conditions, hard labor, the hostility of the vicious guards and mean-spirited fellow inmates, including George Redfield (James Arness), all while maintaining his innocence and struggling to survive, especially when a typhus epidemic breaks out among the prisoners.

Hellgate is a mid-century American B-movie produced by Commander Films Corporation for Robert L. Lippert. Lippert was a "Poverty Row" producer known for delivering low-to-mid-budget genre pictures quickly for the independent and double-bill market, typically in the 1950s when major studio blockbusters were dominating. The film starred two prominent faces of the Western genre, Sterling Hayden and Ward Bond, with a pre-Gunsmoke James Arness in an early villainous role.
