How To Tune Your Drums For That Great Buddy Rich Sound-Ken Loomer
So many drummers have asked me how I tune my drums for that great Buddy Rich sound,so here is the video .First of all,I got to see Buddy Rich live from 1969 to 1986 and heard the way his drums sounded up close and personal. Here I`m using my 1971 Slingerland Buddy Rich drum set with the 14x24 inch bass drum,9x13 inch tom,two 16x16 inch floor toms, and the famous 4x14 inch BR model snare drum. The main point about the way Buddy tension his drums is to make sure they have a big wide open sound that is clear and projects well to the people he is playing for. The snare drum is always crisp and has the type of sound that will be heard over the music. I use this same type of drum tuning on all of my drums. Very important to use the right type of drum heads for this type of drum tuning. I use on all of my toms top and bottom is the Remo Ambassador Smooth White heads. The bass drum I use the Remo Smooth White Emperor head with a two inch felt strip on the back head only. The snare drum I`m using the new Remo White Suede Ambassador head which is a Smooth White head that is ruffed up for brush playing. If you have the Mercy Mercy album that Buddy Rich recorded live, you will hear his Slingerland drums very clearly with the full open tone to it. A great sounding drum set on that recording that projects so well. Most of the records Buddy made were live ,so you hear the real sound of his drums. Not like the studio drum sound you hear today which is made up in the mix in so many of today`s drummers. I will post some links so you can hear my tuning or tension of these Slingerland drums with my Big Band in a live concert. Anything else you want to know about my tuning just ask.
