I've worked with many babies and toddlers who only want to sleep in arms or even "on" someone... even the toddlers. And then there are those who love their car seat, stroller or swing for sleep.

The drive to sleep is biological, the way we sleep is learned. And as early as 4-8 weeks of age your little one is learning what sleep looks like and developing learned behaviors. As your baby ages, those preferences become more engrained.

In this video, I talk about the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations for safe sleep and give you 5 Tips to Help Your Baby Sleep in the Crib.

1. If you have a younger baby, start now! Easier to get a 2 month old to sleep in a crib vs a 9 month old.

2. Work with your baby's sleep drive - try the crib at bedtime and for first nap.

3. Make your put down as easy as possible. Swaddle if less than 4 months to decrease the startle reflex and place your baby down feet, bum, and then head.

4. Give this 5-10 minutes to work. No one wants to hear their baby cry but what if you stood right beside your little one for 5-10 minutes and offered physical and verbal reassurance while she expressed her displeasure for sleeping in the crib. And then she fell asleep and slept for an hour. That would be a win right? You never know until you try. For babies less than 4 months you can try picking up with tears and putting down when tears end. For babies greater than 4 months I find that picking them up just restarts the whole cycle and is more counterproductive than helpful.

5. Consider breaking these sleep habits and doing some "sleep training" or "sleep teaching" as I like to call it.
