Psychedelic folk-rock band from Tecopa, California formed in 1971 by former "Manson Family" members Paul Alan Watkins, Brooks Ramses Poston, and a recruit vocalist Jane Boltinhouse. As with many obscure bands, there is scarce documentation regarding their musical history. All of the following information is alleged by fans and enthusiasts; though contact has been attempted with them, none has been established. Thus, you should take the following information with a grain of salt, as it is mostly "original research."

Desert Sun toured in the 1970's in the Tecopa/Shoshone areas of California. In 1973, Poston and Watkins recorded the soundtrack for Robert Hendrickson and Laurence Merrick's crime documentary "Manson." Several tracks can be heard throughout the film, such as "Bright Yellow", and those later transformed into Desert Sun tracks, such as "Young Girl" and "Is It That You Recall?" (commonly known as "Moments"). Instrumental tracks were also composed for the film; one having been dubbed by fans as "White Cloud Machine."

Paul Watkins and Brooks Poston performed as a duo prior to forming Desert Sun. Footage of at least one performance exists from 1973.

A studio album, titled "Potpurri(sic) of PB & J" according to one fan's music library, was recorded in 1973. A second studio album titled "Jazzacide" was recorded.

Some Desert Sun live performances were also recorded. "Live in Independence" (1973), "Live at Furnace Creek," and "Live at Sierra Inn- Sierra Lake, California." During concerts, Desert Sun would occasionally perform compositions written by Charles Maddox (famously and hereafter known as Charles Manson). A live recording of "Your Home Is Where You're Happy" opens with Poston claiming that the track is one of the only non-original compositions performed by Desert Sun. Additionally, Manson's famous "Look at Your Game, Girl" has been recorded live by Desert Sun.

With regards to Desert Sun's release history, very little is known. Poston and Watkins were credited as performers on Hope Organ's 1991 7" single "Young Girl / Harmony." On some second-pressings of Manson's studio album, LIE: The Love and Terror Cult, Watkins is credited as a hornist. Poston and Watkins were both involved with The Family Jams. In 2009, a 7" re-release of "Young Girl" from the 1973 Manson crime documentary was released by Helter Skelter Records and Celebrate Life. An eight-minute studio recording of "Young Girl" with Jane Boltinhouse on vocals was uploaded to YouTube with no release information.

At some point, Desert Sun split up due to a falling out between Poston and Brooks. Brooks and Boltinhouse later formed a new duo called Northern Lights. They released a 7" single in 1986, "Duck Song / Sailor," and, according to liner notes, had a mailing list for Northern Lights.
