Social Intelligence in Machines, Why and How - Alessandro Vinciarelli

Social intelligence allows us to make sense of others and effectively interact with them, whether it means to share emotions, to understand intentions or to interpret attitudes. As the goal of AI shifts from replacing people to collaborating with them, endowing machines with social intelligence becomes a crucial step towards better interactions between AI-driven technologies and their users. From a scientific and technological point of view, this corresponds to bridging the gap between social or psychological phenomena and their observable, machine detectable traces, from neural activity, to nonverbal behaviour and language. This talk describes the efforts being made in such a direction at the University of Glasgow, with special attention to the interdisciplinary collaboration between AI experts, psychologists and neuroscientists.

The Furhat Conference series is designed to showcase cutting edge research in the community, announce exciting new product updates and engage the world’s top minds in the fields of social robotics & conversational AI in thought-leading discussions.
