Celebrant Marc Reads - Happy The Man (Funeral Poetry)

Celebrant Marc Reads - Happy The Man (Funeral Poetry)

Poem by John Dryden

This is a simple, short poem about achieving success, peace and equilibrium in life. Written in the 1660s by John Dryden (the first British Poet Laureate) it makes a perfect funeral reading.

It is short and simple, but says so much about the person one is remembering. With a few quick changes it can be adapted to suit any gender without losing its power,

Happy the man, and happy he alone,
He who can call today his own:
He who, secure within, can say,
Tomorrow do thy worst, for I have lived today.
Be fair or foul or rain or shine
The joys I have possessed, in spite of fate, are mine.
Not Heaven itself upon the past has power,
But what has been, has been, and I have had my hour.
