May 16th, 1975. The Greatest of All Time, Muhammad Ali takes on a very game Ron Lyle as Ali defends his WBA and WBC World Heavyweight titles. In this fight, Ali weighed in at 224.5 pounds which is the heaviest he’s ever weighed in a world title fight. Ali’s weight was much higher than most had expected. Ali predicted his victory to occur in the 8th round.

In October 1974, Muhammad Ali challenges then undefeated Big George Foreman as Foreman looks to defend his WBA and WBC crowns for the 3rd time. This was a historic night in the sport of boxing that took place in Kinshasa, Zaire (now known as Democratic Republic of the Congo). Going into the fight, Ali was a huge underdog due to his somewhat apparent decline while Foreman was at his physical peak at 25 years of age vs 32 year old Ali.

Additionally, Foreman had knocked out both Ken Norton and Joe Frazier in dominant fashions within 2 rounds while Frazier and Norton had handed Ali his 1st and 2nd professional defeats via decisions.

Known as “The Rumble in the Jungle”, it was a historic and unforgettable moment in the sport of boxing as Ali shockingly stopped Foreman in the 8th round utilizing his rope-a-dope technique that made Foreman punched himself out trying to score a KO. The climatic end happened in the final minutes of the 8th round when Ali landed a beautiful combination while leaning on the ropes, that floors an extremely exhausted Foreman. Foreman would fail to beat the count in time as Ali emerged as the stunning KO winner.

The Rumble in the Jungle was named Fight of the Year 1974 by Ring Magazine and Round 8 of the fight is named Round of the Year by the same publication.

In March 1975, Ali’s 1st title defenses of his WBC and WBA straps was against “The Bayonne Bleeder” Chuck Wepner. Ali toyed with Wepner for the first 8 rounds before a “knockdown” was called by referee Tony Perez in the 9th round. However, observations later indicate that Wepner had stepped on Ali’s foot while landing a punch to the body. From the 10th round onwards, Ali stopped toying around and dominates the courageous Wepner for the rest of the fight en route to a TKO15 victory.

His next opponent would be Ron Lyle.

In February 1973, Lyle lost via UD to Jerry Quarry. But since that lost he had bounce back with 11 wins and 1 draw between April of the same year and December 1974. Lyle picked up notable wins over Juergen Blin, Gregorio Manuel Peralta (2x), Boone Kirkman, Jose Luis Garcia, Jimmy Ellis and Oscar Bonavena during that period. Lyle would lose to Jimmy Young in 1975, 3 months before facing Ali.

In this fight, Ali would once again attempt to utilize the rope-a-dope technique as he did against Foreman but it was apparent that this trick will not work the second time, not particularly against another Ali opponent; Lyle refused to play into Ali’s hands thus there are moments in the fight where little action took place due to Ali’s rope-a-dope attempt and Lyle’s refusal to go along with it.

Ali stepped up in his efforts in the 8th round but he was not able to stop a very determined Lyle thus his prediction did not come true. After several rope-a-dope attempts, Ali would go back to what he knew best - float like a butterfly and sting like a bee!

The final moments in the 11th round was a thing of beauty as Ali landed 1-2 combo on Lyle before bombing him with a barrage of unanswered punches.
