Science New Zealand Award Finalist 2026: Dr Peter Johnston

Dr Peter Johnston has been recognised as a finalist for Lifetime Achievement –honouring more than five decades of scientific leadership that has helped shape Aotearoa New Zealand’s biosecurity, biodiversity knowledge, and primary industries.

An internationally respected mycologist, Peter has published 165+ scientific papers, described 270+ new fungal species, and played a leading role in global efforts to define how fungi are classified and understood.
