The Man Who SAVED Everyone From NUCLEAR WAR #shorts #history

Have you heard of the man who saved the world from nuclear annihilation?

In 1983, Lieutenant Colonel Stanislav Petrov, a Soviet officer at a nuclear early warning system, averted a potential nuclear war when the system had reported that 5 ballistic missiles had been launched from the United States.

Petrov, suspecting a false alarm, decided to wait for a confirmation of the attack—but it never came. Petrov then decided against reporting the incident to his superiors, trusting his instincts of a false alarm and aware that his superiors would retaliate immediately with missiles of their own due to blindly following military doctrine.

He was right. The false alarm was caused by a rare alignment of sunlight on high-altitude clouds. Had he not been in charge of sending the alert up the chain of command—the prescribed doctrine for a warning like this would have been implemented—which would entail all out nuclear war.
