SBP Expands Cashless Eid Cattle Markets | Karachi | Faisal Rehman | Pakistan Connect

State Bank of Pakistan has expanded its cashless cattle market initiative to 96 markets nationwide ahead of Eid ul Azha, marking the third consecutive year of the programme aimed at promoting digital payments in Pakistan’s livestock sector.

According to official figures, Pakistan’s cattle market economy generated an estimated Rs840 billion in overall economic activity in 2025, including livestock sales, transport, animal feed, and related services. Despite rapid growth in digital banking across the country, the majority of transactions in cattle markets continue to take place through cash.

The initiative was first launched in 2024 in partnership with commercial banks across 48 cattle markets, where vendors were provided with QR codes, mobile banking services, and digital account registration facilities. In 2025, the programme expanded further, recording a sharp increase in digital transactions and payment volume.

This year, the State Bank and participating banks have widened the initiative to 96 cattle markets as part of broader efforts to encourage financial digitisation and reduce reliance on undocumented cash transactions during the Eid season.
