WHAT IS TRANEXAMIC ACID?Ah, ANOTHER acid. Like we don’t already have enough of these. But this one’s a little different. Tranexamic acid or TXA for short is a synthetically derived active from lysine, which is an amino acid. TXA can be used topically, intradermally and/or orally, and oral TXA prescriptions have been used for years to stop excessive blood clots, bleeding and menorrhagia, which is when one has heavy menstrual flows. In the past decade or so, dermatologists, specifically in the south Asian region, have been using TXA intradermally to treat melasma. WHAT IS ALPHA ARBUTIN?Alpha arbutin is a natural derivative of hydroquinone, and is popularly used for brightening, skin lightening and fading dark spots. It can be found in antioxidant rich berries such as bearberry, blueberry & cranberry. HOW TO USETranexamic AcidA lot of actives in skincare work much better in conjunction with another active or acid, such as the all-star pairing of niacinamide with retinol. TXA, given how gentle it is, is definitely not enough by itself, says Dr. Kristina Goldenberg of Goldenberg Dermatology. She recommends combining it with retinol, a chemical peel, Vitamin C or kojic acid for full-power brightening. Alpha ArbutinAlpha arbutin works well on its own and gets even more powerful in conjunction with other brightening actives such as Vitamin C. A lot of skin brightening creams already have a safe percentage of the active present in them. However, sensitive skin types might develop some irritation at first, so it's best to patch test irrespective. Like with literally any other skincare product, especially so if its an active, patch-testing and patience are of utmost importance. Trying out a small patch on the inner wrist for 24 hours can give those with ultra-sensitive skin a better idea of what works for them.More on Lysine: https://www.byrdie.com/lysine-for-skin-4783421
