Mecanum Vehicle - LEGO Mindstorms Robot Inventor (51515)
My son Marin (10) just made a simple Mecanum car using LEGO Mindstorms Robot Inventor kit (51515) and Chinese Mecanum wheels.
The car is controlled with an Xbox controller. He had some problems writing the software, so I helped him out.
The program is written in Scratch and must be started in streaming mode. There is some lag while controlling the car. This is unfortunate and we hope there will be way to use a controller without streaming mode. Preferably in Python. If anyone knows how to use game controller in Python (with Robot Inventor kit) and in download mode, please let us know.
The program is shown at the end of the video. Could be simpler, but the idea was to have smart control in case both joysticks are used at the same time, but it was not really necessary
Sorry for the shaky video. I expected more from stabilization in video editor, but it was to much for the stabilization algorithm.

It has to be said that the wheels are not perfect but just OK. The LEGO Tehnic adapters should be installed tightly and not pulled out again. There is a lateral force to the wheels so the adapters have to be tightly connected. Sure, it could always be glued, but glue is typically a one way street. On one new wheel, there was a single roller which was not rolling smoothly. However, it was fine after few rides. Also, it is possible to take the wheels apart and put them back. All in all, it was worth the money, but, as my son has put it, the Mecanum wheels are a one-trick pony. I agree, but we had fun enough with that one trick!
