BEST ROAD IN PAKISTAN!? - AUSSIES EXPLORING PAKISTAN - The Way Overland - Episode 58

You've probably never heard about the Kalash people; neither had we! Thanks to our new friend Sana and his revision of our plans for Pakistan, we had an unforgettable experience getting to know the Kalash culture and the adventure that was had getting to one of the most remote areas in Pakistan, just kilometers away from Taliban-controlled zones of Afghanistan.

Spread across three valleys in the Chitral district, the Kalash people are the smallest minority group in Pakistan with only around 3000 people left.

Although Pakistan is an Islamic Republic, with more than 95% of its population being Muslim, the Kalash hold on to their own religious (Pagan) beliefs, traditional dress, way of life, language and are also noted for their fair skin and blue eyes.

A few other interesting differences between the Kalash and their conservative Muslim neighbours is that they drink locally made wine and dance around fires, the women are more liberal and are allowed to choose who they marry or even elope, and can divorce their husbands. In the past the deceased were also laid to rest in open graves!

As part of our incredible Kalash experience, we learnt how to make Dum Pukht with (very) fresh mutton by the master chef Sana, we drank the local wine and danced around the fire to a demonstration of Kalash music and even had the opportunity to wear the traditional dress.

I should also give a quick rundown on the road into Kalash; from the main road to Chitral we drove 18km which included crossing suspension bridges, driving through small villages and also one of the most epic roads of this trip! To drive the 18km took almost two hours as for most of the way it's a single width dirt track with a huge drop off on one side and overhanging rock on the other. All of this meant careful navigation especially when there was oncoming traffic!
