$14,000 CERB Payback UPDATE | Emergency Debate, NEW Letter to Canada, Proof of Requirement Change???

If you haven't already heard about the new letter that some Canadians have been receiving, it's claiming that despite thinking they were fully eligible for CERB, they're going to have to pay back the ENTIRE $14,000.

Since this story was first released, a LOT has happened. The NDP called for an emergency debate, the green party addressed Canadians about the issue, and new evidence has popped up showing that (at the very least) the messaging around gross vs net was unclear!

After doing a little bit of digging, I found an email that was sent out to Canadians who wrote in to their MPs about this problem. In it, Jagmeet Singh talks about how an NDP MP requested an emergency debate to talk about the CERB repayment issue.

However, this request was denied, even though the house of commons will be going on a hiatus very soon. This means that the issue will not be discssed for the time being.

Also, there's a clip of former finance minister Bill Morneau claiming that Canadians who earned $5000 in REVENUE would be eligible. This does not mean net income, revenue implies Gross income.

People can slip up with their words, and that could be the reason for this language, but at the very least it shows how confusing the messaging was around this requirement.
