Winning and breaking world records as a Paralympian | Flora Ugwunwa | TEDxLagos

Over 30 years ago, Flora was diagnosed with an illness that rendered her unable to use her legs, but she decided it wouldn’t determine her fate. She shares the story of how she got into para-athletics and broke a world record in Javelin, proving that there’s ability in disability. Flora Ugwunwa (born 26 June 1984) is a Nigerian Paralympic athlete competing in F54-classification events. She studied Business administration at the Nnamdi Azikwe University. She took up para-athletics in 2011 in Edo State, Nigeria. She has represented Nigeria at two Paralympic Games, winning Gold medals at both editions in the Javelin event. In fact, during the 2016 Games, She set a new world record of 20.25m at this event which stands to date.

She has competed at several world para athletics championships and won various colours of medals and doing the nation proud. She aspires to keep breaking records and putting Nigeria on the world map.
