When a 100-Year Old Fort Sank a Brand New German Flagship - Battle of the Drobak Sound

The Battle of Drøbak Sound marked the end of the so-called Phoney War and the beginning of World War II in Western Europe.

On April 9, 1940, a German fleet led by the newly-built cruiser Blücher approached Drøbak to begin the invasion of Norway.

The area was one of the country's critical points of naval defense, and the Germans intended to occupy the Norwegian capital of Oslo and capture King Haakon VII.

But unbeknownst to the Germans, the nearby Oscarsborg Fortress held a decades-old secret weapon, and their fleet was floating into a dangerous trap.
