Frederick Delius Intermezzo and Serenade from ‘Hassan’

Frederick Delius
Intermezzo and Serenade from ‘Hassan’ (1920)

Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields
Neville Marriner, conductor

Painting: Charles Sprague Pearce, Lamentation Over the Death of the First-Born of Egypt, 1877

Composed in 1920, the incidental music for James Elroy Fletcher’s play ‘Hassan’ was the last work that Delius was able to write in his own hand. Thomas Beecham made this arrangement. The music is characterised by a wistful, rocking simplicity.
