'Cattlevoltaics' to boost land and herd health

“Cattlevoltaics” is a new approach for ranchers looking to strengthen their income while preserving pastures. It involves grazing cattle under solar panels and is shown to low heat stress, improve forage and keep land working for agriculture.

Recent field studies show that shade from solar panels helps cattle maintain body temperature, reduce water consumption and gain weight more efficiently. At the same time, grazing keeps vegetation in check and naturally improves soil health.

Leasing land to solar energy developments also presents ranchers with an additional income opportunity while reaping benefits for their cattle.
Renewable Energy Farmers of America (REFA) is a new, farmer-led association helping landowners navigate these opportunities. REFA executive director, Jeff Risley, joins us to share how “cattlevoltaics” can redefine pasture use and explain how ranchers can get started with a project.
