Hannah Chapman - "Dialogue with a Dictator Info Management and Popular Support in Putin’s Russia"

Political participation is often viewed as a central component of democratic governance. But can it become a tool of authoritarianism as well? This talk documents the development of managed participation in Putin’s Russia and evaluates the conditions under which these tools can help—or hurt—modern-day autocrats.

Hannah S. Chapman is the Theodore Romanoff Assistant Professor of Russian Studies and an Assistant Professor of International and Area Studies at the University of Oklahoma. Her research examines political participation, information management, and public opinion in Russia and the former Soviet Union. Her work has been published or is forthcoming in Comparative Political Studies, Comparative Politics, Democratization, International Studies Quarterly, and Perspectives on Politics.
